Concerning Philip Guston. When I think of Guston's work before about the mid 60's a scene from the beginning of the movie The Starfish by Man Ray comes to mind. In that part of the film figures are seen but they are blurred. Guston pretty much called his earlier abstract and all abstract work a lie and a sham.
