It is said that deserters from both sides banded together and lived like animals in no man's land in trenches and caves. At night they would come out and scavenge off corpses for clothing and food. The British decided to carefully go out at night and leave a package of rations for those living in no man's land. A few days later soldiers went out again carefully at night to see if the package was found. They found the package, unopened with a note attached to it that read, "No Way."
